Vibration control system to improve seismic resistance of steel towersVertical Shear Links

  • Disaster Prevention
  • Infrastructure
  • Maintenance & Management

Our vibration control system, which consists of arm parts and vibration control dampers, effectively reduces swaying by exerting a damping effect on the bending deformation of tower structures.
Patent No. 7057545.

Main points

  • Improved vibration resistance without compromising the seismic and wind resistance of existing stacks
  • Installation can be done without working at high elevations
  • Installation can be done while tower is in operation

Principle and mechanism of vertical shear links

Validation analysis/Validation experiment

The ratio of stress to allowable stress of the main post of the vibration control structure was reduced by up to 50% compared to the original structure, confirming the vibration control effect of the vertical shear link.

Spectrum of ratio of stress to allowable stress and maximum response acceleration for the original structure and vibration control structure

The analytical and experimental values of the response factor (resonance curve) show a good correspondence across all types of vibration control devices tested. Notably, the MC type exhibits a smaller response factor than the C type, indicating a greater damping effect.
